The NIH’s neurological institute puts the number in the United States at roughly 20 million — and says the real figure is probably higher, because plenty of cases never get written down as neuropathy at all.¹

None of this is medical advice, and none of it applies to everyone. What these four have in common is a documented link to nerve damage in the published literature — and two of them are recognised causes of neuropathy in their own right, not just things that make an existing problem louder.
Alcohol. The clearest link on this list. A systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal of Neurology examined alcohol-related peripheral neuropathy, and a review in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology goes through the proposed mechanisms.⁴⁵ Dose and duration are what the literature keeps returning to, and where your own intake sits is a question for a doctor rather than for a page.
Sugar and refined carbohydrate. Not because sugar attacks a nerve directly, but because blood glucose is the variable most of this research revolves around. The DCCT trial, in Annals of Internal Medicine, reported on intensive glucose control and the development and progression of neuropathy.⁶ That trial was about the medical management of diabetes, not about skipping dessert — and it is still the strongest reason here to take glucose seriously.
Vitamin B6, in high doses. The counterintuitive one: a vitamin sold for nerve health can damage nerves when the dose is high enough. The New England Journal of Medicine described sensory neuropathy from pyridoxine abuse in 1983, and it has been recognised since.⁷ Worth reading every label you already take — B6 shows up in energy drinks, fortified foods and multivitamins, and the amounts stack without anyone noticing.
Gluten, for some people. Not for everyone: for people with coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity. A Lancet Neurology review covers the neurological manifestations of gluten sensitivity, peripheral neuropathy among them.⁸ This one is testable rather than a guess, so if it has never been ruled out for you, it is a reasonable thing to ask about.
